15 years after relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga, Rot-Weiss Essen returns to professional football.
The German champion from 1955 defeated 2-0 (1-0) on the last matchday of the Regionalliga West Rot Weiss Ahlen and thus prevailed in the remote duel for the title against Prussia Münster. The Bundesliga founding member played 2-1 (0: 1) against 1. FC Köln II.
Cedric Harenbrock (29th) and Simon Engelmann (60th) scored the gates for the Esseners in front of 16,650 spectators on Hafenstraße, which, thanks to the better goal difference, remained before the same pursuer.
In Münster, the hosts fell behind in front of 14,300 visitors by Joshua (40th). Thorben Deters (49.) and Marcel Hoffmeier (72nd) turned the game.
Essen was last third in 2007/08 when the regional league was the first class among the 2nd Bundesliga.
In the Bundesliga, the 1953 cup winner played a total of seven years, most recently in 1977. Münster, only in the first season Bundesliga club, had relegated from the 3rd division in 2020.
