In 2017 the fanatica of Star Wars received episode eight of the saga, The Last Jedi , award that was not well received by critics and followers, thus being considered the worst of the new trilogy. However, there are people who still have this controversial film, and it is neither more nor less than the director who gave him life, Rian Johnson.
In a recent interview with Empire , the film creator remembers this delivery on the number five of him, commented that practically from day one is proud of the final result. Even with the background of criticism and annoying fans with the project.
Here’s comments:
I am even more proud five years later. When he was up to bat, he really fanned the ball. It’s not just a Star Wars movie, it’s a movie about Star Wars and what it means to fans. I think it is impossible for any of us to approach Star Wars without thinking about it as a myth with which they raised us, and how that myth, that story, was embedded in us and affected us. The final intention was not shed, the intention was to get to the basic and fundamental power of myth. And, ultimately, I hope the film is an affirmation of the power of the Star Wars myth in our lives.
Also, he defends the abrupt change he had Luke Skywalker regarding the teachings of Jedi :
For me, the final images of the movie do not deconstruct the myth of Luke Skywalker, build it and he hugs it. They are absolutely challenging the notion of ‘throwing the past’ and accepting what really matters about his myth and what will inspire the next generation. So, for me, the process of shedding always has the interest of reaching something essential that really matters.
Remember that this movie is available at Disney Plus .
